Technology

The technology section of the PA site is specifically geared for the teachers and staff at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA. It is being posted on the school Internet site because there may be articles of interest that will be helpful to the general public. In addition, this portion of the site is intended to increase public awareness of the role of technology in our schools.

Computer Resource Specialist: Lee Mitchell

Areas of Responsibilities

In support of the Educational Technology Program goals, the computer resource specialist (CRS) has four major areas of responsibility: instructor, instructional partner, program manager, and technical support. Program objectives define each area of responsibility.

Examples of tasks are listed that would assist in meeting the defined objective.

CRS as Instructor:

• Teaches cooperatively with teachers to ensure the effective integration of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETs), the Virginia State Technology SOL and the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Computer/Technology Student Proficiencies.

• Models effective uses of appropriate instructional technology in the classroom for teachers and students.

CRS as Instructional Partner:

• Collaborates regularly with LMS and teachers to support the integration of technology in the classroom.

• Demonstrates continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies while modeling best practices.

• Facilitates and assists teachers with the effective integration of the State Computer/Technology SOL and Virginia Beach Student Technology Proficiencies.

• Integrates technology SOL and technology student proficiencies into subject-area curricula.

• Plans with teachers and support staff.

• Finds and prepares materials and resources for classes (i.e. websites, handouts, hardware, and templates).

• Assists in the creation of lessons and lesson plan templates for instructional use.

• Contributes to the development of skills for staff in the use of instructional resources (i.e. templates, online tests, individualizing for special needs).

• Consults with teachers and provides resources and feedback as they design methods and strategies based on appropriate SOL curricular objectives to ensure the seamless integration of technology.

• Assists in the design of activities that encourage higher level thinking skills through the use of technology.

• Makes training opportunities available for building level staff to meet the requirements and to implement the VTSIP.

• Provides individual support and assistance for software and hardware.

• Provides input in the selection of software tools and applications to meet curricular objectives.

• Assists staff in the ongoing development of knowledge, skills, and understanding of technology systems, resources, and services that are aligned with district and state technology plans.

• Introduces staff to new technologies.

• Assists staff with technology issues.

• Reinforces correct technology terms and concepts with staff.

• Reinforces the ethical use of technology resources.

• Teaches specific software and hardware to staff.

• Fosters the use of technology for the synthesis of information.

• Trains and supports staff in the integration of educational technology skills into the curriculum.

• Trains staff on basic troubleshooting techniques.

• Assists teachers in obtaining, learning, and using educational technology resources to improve their instructional effectiveness.

• Assists teachers in developing assessment strategies and evaluation techniques to use with current technology based instruction.

• Enables teachers to use current research for self-assessment and evaluation as they move along their professional growth continuum.

• Collaborates regularly with LMS and teachers to support the integration of technology in the classroom.

CRS as Program Manager:

• Plans, manages, and oversees a technology program which supports the mission, shared commitments, objectives, and continuous improvement of the school and school division.

• Serves as liaison between the Department of Technology and the school.

• Plans for, implements and oversees procedures, schedules, and policies related to the instructional technology program.

• Provides technology expertise and advice to the principal concerning the school improvement plan in regard to short and long term technology needs.

• Maintains accurate records and submits reports in a timely manner.

• Provides technology leadership.

• Disseminates technology information to staff and students.

• Manages technical, financial, and physical resources to maintain a strong instructional technology program.

• Manages staff and student network accounts, passwords, files, monitoring of server space, set up of class folders, and deleting old files.

• Administers network resources (network accounts).

• Maintains and supports the computer lab (scheduling, security, maintenance, policies, and supervision).

• Coordinates computer hardware/peripheral replacement and refreshment.

• Participates in decisions related to evaluation, purchasing, and allocation of hardware and software.

• Orders, maintains, and disseminates technology consumable supplies.

• Assists the principal (if requested) in the development of a building technology budget.

• Provides access to technology resources to support the curriculum (i.e., digital cameras, scanners, etc.).

• Establishes an environment that encourages creative and independent use of instructional technology throughout the school.

• Conducts activities to promote utilization of technology.

CRS as Technical Support:

• Provides basic ongoing support to teachers and other school staff in the use of technology.

• Provides minimal basic maintenance of technology and peripherals.

• Troubleshoots computer and peripheral equipment.

• Installs and maintains approved software and software upgrades.

• Coordinates computer hardware repairs.

• Inspects and verifies technology purchases.

• Coordinates routine maintenance of hardware.

• Manages and supports network resources as allowed by the Department of Technology.

• Participates in on-going CRS technical support training.

• Collaborates with staff on software purchases with regard to technical requirements and limitations.

• Serves as an advisor for general technical issues.

• Provides logistical support for new computers and peripherals (physical setup & placement).

• Serves as a technical liaison with district technical support staff, outside vendors, and serves as vendor contact on technical issues.• Provides support for division level technology initiatives to staff.
