Network

Teachers Primary Network Storage
Teachers are allocated 500 MB of storage on the network (H drive) and 500 MB of storage on the Sharepoint Web Server. Teachers may send the CRS an email requesting more storage space on the network if needed. The network server for teachers (vbschools) is backed up nightly. Files are secure and protected from loss.

Students Network Storage
Students will have 10 MB of storage on the network (H drive) and 100 MB of storage on the Sharepoint Web Server. The H (network) drive should be used to save work in process that can be accessed from any school computer. The student network server (vbstudents) is not backed up. If this server fails data can be lost. Please note that this server is for temporary storage. Files should be uploaded to the student's Sharepoint home page, and/or backed up to a flash drive or home computer.

To save files on the network (teachers and students):
1. Log on with your network ID and password.
2. Open the application and file you will be using.
3. Click File/Save as
4. Click down arrow next to My Documents (or whatever appears in "Save in" dialogue box), browse drop down menu for drive that has teacher user name or student ID # . . . . (H) and open.
5. Name the file and click Save.

Backups
We are now recommending USB flash drives as the media choice for backups and transporting data. They are convenient to carry, inexpensive, and can hold large amounts of data. CD-R's are also good for archiving files. Avoid using CD-RW's. For security reasons, we are recommending that teachers save files in their personal network folder rather than the hard drive on a school computer.

We are discouraging the use of floppy disks. They do not hold large amounts of data, can be easily damaged, and are unreliable. As school computers are replaced, they will not have floppy disk drives. Never rely on a floppy disk to hold all your important information. There are several cases where teachers and students lost all their data because they didn't save it in a permanent place.
