Baseball State Champs 2005

About the 2005 season:
The never-say-die Princess Anne baseball team erased an 8-0 deficit to win the 2005 state championship in a dramatic 11-10, 12 inning victory, over Osbourn H.S.

PA chipped away at the lead getting two runs in the bottom of the 3rd. They got back in it on Baylor U. bound Beamer Weems' three-run homer in the 5th. Still down by three, they tied it in the bottom of the 7th on Dan Hudson's bases loaded double. They fell behind in the 11th, but tied it again on Sam Harrison's single. In the 12th inning, they trailed again by a run, 10-9. Down to their final out, with no one on base, the Cavs scored two runs on three consecutive hits: a single by Alex Owen, a double by Weems to tie it, an intentional walk to Hudson, and the game winning single to right by Jake McAloose sending Weems home with the winning run into a mob of teammates at the plate. (See the 17 second video clip (784 kb) of the winning hit.)

To get to State, the Cavs beat First Colonial High School 14-2 in a Beach District playoff to win their first regular season championship since 1985. The win earned PA a trip to the Eastern Region Tournament, in spite of the rain shortened 5 inning 3-2 loss to Cox in the semi-finals of the District Tournament.

PA beat Churchland 7-2 in the quarter final of the Eastern Region tournament. They won their 20th game of the year, beating Menchville 3-0, in the region semi-finals to qualify for the State Tournament. They lost to FC in the finals of the Eastern Region tournament, forcing them to go on the road as a second seed, where they beat James Robinson 7-1, setting the stage for their 2-0 semi-final win over Stonewall Jackson, and the state championship game at William and Mary.

With six of nine starters back from the 2004 team that finished 16-6, PA was the preseason pick as #1 in Tidewater. They exceeded all expectations by finishing #1 in the State in 2005.

The 23 wins in 2005 broke the school record for most wins in a season that was set last year.
